Psychotherapy

As a clinician, I am warm, curious, transparent, and collaborative. I will tell you what I see in real time.
From a theoretical perspective, I approach our work together psychodynamically, meaning that we will focus on more fully understanding yourself and your motivations. I will listen to what is said, and what is unsaid. Ultimately, I think of psychodynamic work as moving you closer to yourself and your own intuition.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is an empirically validated treatment for many people and many mental health challenges. Evidence has shown that this type of therapy retains benefits for even longer than other modalities, as it impacts the fabric of the person’s psyche, leading to lasting change.
Let’s begin.
-
The premise of psychodynamic work posits that we are only partly conscious of what drives our feelings and actions, and that a deeper exploration will help to alleviate painful symptoms.
The purpose of this inquiry is to build self awareness and process what has been painfully brewing under the surface. With time, this process will allow space for reflection, an increased sense of choice, and reconfiguration, leading to meaningful and lasting changes in your life.

Yes! Psychodynamic psychotherapy is an empirically validated treatment for PTSD and Complex-PTSD.
At its heart, trauma disrupts connections. It disrupts connections in relationships, connections between thoughts, between our emotions, between body signals, and it disrupts our connection to self. Psychodynamic psychotherapy works to reconstitute these links.
These connections can be processed and understood through the psychodynamic process: asking questions, holding space, noticing patterns, understanding parts of the self, wondering about and experiencing the therapeutic relationship, and processing emotional content.
I have seen many people heal their trauma through this method.
-
The definition of trauma in our society can be broad, but I find that trauma work can be useful for folks who have been through overtly traumatic events, in addition to people who have experienced the accumulation of complicated family dynamics, prolonged exposure to toxic family members, misattunements, and/or invalidations, which can be just as disruptive over time. Trauma work can also be useful for people who have experienced systemic violations, microagressions, and/or hate related to identity.
In our work together we will explore traumatic memories, feelings, and patterns at your pace. Contextualizing these behaviors and reactions is crucial in trauma work, as they were once useful responses to a chaotic environment.
I affirm and welcome patients of all racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender identities, and dedicate myself to helping your full self enter into our work together. I strive not to lose sight of the socio-political landscape that people navigate and are burdened by on a daily basis, and how these systems create and perpetuate trauma.
-
Come with an open mind and ready to speak about yourself. I will typically start by asking you what is on your mind, and we can go from there. The work will feel open ended and driven by you. This may produce anxiety for some, as it can feel like you don’t know what to say. I will guide you through this. Most people find that it isn’t as scary once you start.
Additionally, while our work will be open ended, I have found that being passive as a therapist, particularly a trauma therapist, is not useful and does not do justice to the suffering of the person seeking therapy. In our work together, you will feel that I show up with you. This does not mean there will not be silences or moments of pause--I will move between moments of quiet reflection, where I am taking in and considering what you are saying, and other moments of more active participation, where I am asking questions, noticing patterns, or offering thoughts, connections, or associations.
Together we will follow the trail of breadcrumbs from your unconscious, and closely listen to your associations, dreams, desires, and fears.

I have a unique background in art and existentialism that I bring to our work. In this way, I keep your uniqueness in mind and meet you where you are.
I believe therapy is inherently a creative process. I enjoy using humor, archetypes, and playful metaphor as part of the creative therapeutic process. I additionally welcome individuals who would like to bring aspects of tarot, literature, and/or art to our sessions for inspiration. We may also incorporate tarot readings which I will facilitate in our sessions, if that is of interest to you.

I offer supervision and consultation on matters pertaining to the psychotherapeutic process, esoteric and archetypal imagery within the therapeutic field, and working with trauma from a psychodynamic perspective. Supervision is a highlight of my work; I would love to speak about your cases with you!
